On July 4th we celebrate the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopting the Declaration of Independence announcing the colonies separation from Great Britain. The Preamble famously states: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness.” These stirring words were meant to convince Americans to put their lives on the line for the cause of freedom and to unite us through the vision of a better life. As Christians, we believe that our country and our freedoms are a gift from God. Let us celebrate these gifts that God has given us.
We also believe that each person is created in the image and likeness of God, and that God’s love for us is unconditional. From its beginning the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul visited the needy in their homes. This action is a charism of Vincentians to have the highest respect and dignity of our neighbors in need. As we reflect on the words that all of us are created equal, that we all have certain inalienable rights, let us make a special effort to help restore the dignity and respect of our sisters and brothers in Christ who are less fortunate than you and me.
